Khafajah, Archaeological site in Diyala Governorate, Iraq.

The excavation site spans multiple mounds containing temples, administrative buildings, and residential structures from ancient Mesopotamian civilizations.

Between 1930 and 1937, archaeologists from the Oriental Institute of Chicago conducted seven seasons of excavations, uncovering structures dating from 3100 to 1750 BC.

The temples dedicated to the moon god Sin and goddess Nintu contained numerous clay tablets documenting religious practices and administrative functions.

The archaeological remains are distributed across four primary mounds, with Mound A containing the principal temple complexes and administrative structures.

Archaeologists discovered 112 clay tablets within the temple of Sin, providing detailed records of regional administration between 1820 BC and 1780 BC.
