Tuz Khurmatu Air Base, Military airbase in Saladin Governorate, Iraq.
Tuz Khurmatu Air Base is a military airfield in Saladin Governorate, located in northern Iraq. The facility has a 9,800-foot runway and sits approximately 180 kilometers north of Baghdad and 14 kilometers west of the town of Tuz Khurmatu.
The airfield originally served as an Iraqi Air Force installation before being seized by United States forces following military operations in 2003. Control of the facility later transferred to the Iraqi Army as local military forces expanded their regional role.
The base transferred to the Iraqi Army's Cobra Battalion of the 4th Division in 2006, marking local military forces' increased regional responsibility.
The site contains several reinforced aircraft shelters and serves as an operational headquarters for military forces in the region. Visitors should expect security restrictions and should check current access procedures in advance.
The base experienced frequent rocket attacks from opposing forces immediately after United States troops established their presence in 2004.
