Salar de Agua Amarga, Salt flat in Atacama Region, Chile
Salar de Agua Amarga is a salt flat located in the Atacama Region at high elevation within the Andes mountains. The landscape is covered with white salt deposits mixed with gypsum minerals and ringed by small pools of water.
This salt flat was first documented in early 20th-century geographical records that noted its brackish water. The area has long been part of the high-altitude geography of the Andes.
The salt flat holds geological importance for scientists studying water geochemistry in closed basins of northern Chile's regions I, II, and III.
Access is via rough tracks that can become difficult in wet weather. Visitors should bring warm clothing since temperatures are cold and the sun is intense at this elevation.
The southeastern part of the salt flat features stromatolitic formations that hint at the water sources. These biological structures form through layers of minerals and algal deposits from the water.
