Established in 1959 as Ecuador's first national park, the protected area gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979 for its natural and scientific importance.
The Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island conducts scientific studies and implements conservation programs to protect the native species.
Visitors must obtain a transit card and pay entrance fees, with direct flights available from mainland Ecuador to the islands of Baltra and San Cristóbal.
Marine iguanas, found exclusively in the Galápagos, swim in ocean waters to feed on seaweed, making them the only sea-feeding lizards in the world.
