Lake Parón, Glacial lake in Cordillera Blanca, Peru.
Lake Parón is a glacial lake in the Cordillera Blanca range, situated around 4,200 meters above sea level within Huascarán National Park. Its waters spread across a large basin surrounded by snow-capped peaks and mountain ridges.
The lake formed thousands of years ago as glaciers moved through mountain valleys and left behind steep rock walls and natural barriers. Over time, melting ice and water flow shaped the deep basin that exists today.
Indigenous communities in the region have long depended on this lake for water supply and daily survival in the high mountains. The local people's connection to the place shapes how they understand their relationship with nature and the land around them.
The lake is best reached from Huaraz via organized trips that take about 6 to 7 hours of driving each way, requiring an early departure. Visitors should prepare for high altitude conditions, cold temperatures, and intense sun exposure, as there is minimal shelter at the site.
The mountain Artesonraju rising above its waters bears a striking resemblance to the logo of Paramount Pictures film studio. This accidental similarity has made the peak famous among travelers, even though it ranks lower among the region's climbing challenges.
