Laguna 69, Alpine lake in Huascarán National Park, Peru
Laguna 69 is a high alpine lake in Huascarán National Park situated at 4,625 meters elevation between snow-covered peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. The water displays an intense turquoise color created by glacial sediment, giving the lake its distinctive appearance.
The lake was discovered during park mapping surveys in the 1950s and received its numerical name from cartographers. This naming method was a practical solution for cataloging multiple lakes across the region.
The name comes from park surveyors who numbered water bodies during the 1950s mapping expeditions. Visitors today encounter this plain naming system as part of the lake's unusual character.
Reaching the lake requires good physical preparation and several days of acclimatization due to the high elevation. Visitors should bring plenty of water, wear warm clothing, and start early in the day to have enough daylight for the trek.
Water from Chacraraju mountain glaciers feeds this lake, creating a natural reservoir at one of Peru's highest elevations. Daily glacier melt continuously supplies cold water that shapes the lake's intensely colored appearance.
