Forward Operating Base Lightning, Military base in Paktia Province, Afghanistan.
Forward Operating Base Lightning was a military installation located in Paktia Province, approximately 30 kilometers from the city of Gardez. The base sat on a mountain plateau at about 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) elevation and included helicopter landing areas and buildings for personnel and supplies.
The base was established by the US Army in 2005 to support NATO operations in the region. It remained operational until March 2020, when it closed after completing its missions.
Task Force Southeast conducted extensive training programs with the 203rd Corps of Afghan National Army and 303rd Afghanistan National Police Zone.
The site was located on challenging mountain terrain with limited access and extreme winter weather conditions. Visitors should expect rough conditions and bring appropriate gear suited for high elevation mountain regions.
E Troop of the 153rd Cavalry and the 53rd Iron Brigade Combat Team operated from this mountain base at 2,286 meters elevation.
