Forward Operating Base Shank, forward operating base of U.S. military
Forward Operating Base Shank is a military facility located in Logar Province in eastern Afghanistan. The base contains asphalt runways stretching over two thousand meters, helipads, and control tower infrastructure designed to support aircraft operations and security operations.
The base was built in 2008 by the US Army and named after a sergeant killed in the region two years prior. It experienced frequent rocket attacks during its operational years and served as a key training site for Afghan police forces until US forces withdrew in 2021.
The base is named after a fallen American soldier, reflecting how international military presence has been commemorated in the region. Its operations shaped daily life in the nearby town of Baraki Barak, influencing local employment and economic activity for many years.
The facility sits at an elevation above two thousand meters and is surrounded by tall fences and security checkpoints. Access requires military authorization, and visitors should be aware of the remote location in a mountainous region with limited services nearby.
The location earned the nickname Rocket City due to heavy rocket fire it endured during its operational years. Today the abandoned facility sits with crumbling buildings and overgrown grounds as a quiet reminder of the end of a long period of international military involvement.
