Camp Leatherneck, Military base in Nahri Saraj District, Afghanistan.
Camp Leatherneck was a large military facility with hundreds of buildings for command centers, housing, and operational spaces across Helmand Province. The infrastructure spread over several square kilometers and worked closely with neighboring camps in the region.
The facility was built in 2008 to house thousands of troops during the military presence in the country. It was handed over to Afghan authorities in 2014 after foreign forces withdrew from the region.
Marine units at Camp Leatherneck established connections with local Afghan communities through regular meetings and joint development projects in Helmand Province.
The location was remote and had very limited access to civilians due to security requirements. Distance from nearby towns and the need for official clearance made visits difficult and unsafe for ordinary tourists.
After troop withdrawal, soldiers left behind hundreds of thousands of water bottles and computer equipment for Afghan authorities. These massive supplies reflected the scale of the military operation that had run at the location.
