Uíge Province, Administrative province in northwestern Angola
Uíge is a province in northwestern Angola with mountainous terrain and fertile valleys. The territory comprises sixteen municipalities including Alto Cauale, Ambuila, and Maquela do Zombo.
From the Middle Ages until Portuguese colonization arrived, this territory formed the center of the Kongo Kingdom, known for metalwork. The region later experienced profound changes through colonial rule.
The local population speaks Kikongo and maintains traditional ways of life rooted in the rural landscape for generations. Visitors can observe handcrafted skills and farming practices that remain visible in daily life.
Visitors can reach the region through Uíge Airport with regular flights to the capital Luanda. Travel should be planned in advance since infrastructure is limited.
During the 1950s, the region became Angola's leading coffee producer and transformed from a modest market area into an agricultural center. This agricultural specialization shapes the local economy to this day.
