Peulla, Mountain village in Los Lagos Region, Chile
Peulla is a mountain village on the eastern shore of Lake Todos los Santos, surrounded by Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park and three snow-capped volcanoes. It sits in a narrow valley where dense forest comes right down to the water's edge.
The village began as a key stopping point on the lake route connecting Chile and Argentina, linking Puerto Varas with Bariloche by water. This trade route shaped the settlement's early development.
The name Peulla comes from the Mapuche language and means 'spring shoots,' reflecting the indigenous roots and natural rhythms of this region. You can see this heritage woven into how locals relate to the land and seasons.
You can reach Peulla only by catamaran from Petrohué dock, with the journey taking around two hours across Lake Todos los Santos. Weather can change quickly, so bring warm layers and rain protection for the boat ride.
The village remains completely isolated without road access, and all supplies and visitors arrive either by water or through a small airfield. This remoteness has kept the community unchanged and gives it a distinctive character.
