Callaqui

Callaqui is a stratovolcano located in the Biobio Region within the southern Andes, rising to approximately 3000 meters. Its summit contains a crater with a small lake nestled within it.

The volcano experienced a recorded explosive eruption in 1751, followed by sporadic activity in 1864 and 1937. Small steam-driven ash emissions occurred in 1980.

Local indigenous communities maintain strong territorial connections with the volcano region, integrating it into their traditional environmental perspectives.

The best time to visit is during drier months, as accessibility becomes difficult in rainy weather. Bring sturdy footwear and weather protection, as the site is exposed to strong winds and changing conditions.

The volcanic structure extends along a roughly 11-kilometer fissure and displays a distinctive shape resembling an overturned canoe. This unusual form makes it a notable geological feature in the region.
