Choquequirao cable car, Proposed aerial tramway in Apurímac, Peru.
The Choquequirao cable car is a proposed aerial tramway connecting Kiuñalla in the Apurímac region to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park in Cusco across steep mountainous terrain. The system aims to provide direct access to this remote site, which currently requires a multi-day trek to reach.
The initiative began in 2013 when the Ministry of Housing requested its inclusion in the private investment promotion program and received approval through Supreme Resolution 068-2013-EF. This approval marked the official starting point for developing this transportation solution.
The transportation system will form part of a tourist circuit connecting Choquequirao with Salkantay, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley archaeological sites.
The project is still in the planning phase and will transport visitors directly from the southwestern area to the archaeological park. Once completed, travelers will cross steep slopes and the river valley, offering a more comfortable alternative to trekking routes.
The project aims to increase annual visitors from approximately 8,000 to over one million, representing a major shift in how people access this archaeological site. The cable car would cross the Apurímac River gorge, a feature that makes the construction particularly demanding.
