Tarma, Mountain city in Junín Region, Peru.
Tarma is a mountain city in the Tarma Province of the Junín Region in central Peru, sitting at an altitude above 3000 meters. Streets run through several levels with residential neighborhoods and agricultural zones scattered along the surrounding slopes.
Spanish colonial administrators relocated the capital from Tarmatambo to the current site during the 17th century. This shift turned the settlement into a commercial hub linking the Andes with the Amazon lowlands.
Flower fields spread across the hillsides near the center, where families cultivate roses and other crops for festivals and markets. Textile workshops in the surrounding district produce woven goods using looms and methods passed through generations.
Visitors should prepare for cooler temperatures and thinner air, especially after arriving from lower altitudes. The center is best explored on foot, though steep sections require some time to adjust.
The nearby Huagapo Grotto contains cave systems with rock formations and ancient wall paintings. These drawings show traces of people who lived here centuries ago.
