Lake Junín, Andean lake in Junín, Peru
Lake Junín is a high-altitude Andean lake located in the Junín region at about 4,080 meters elevation and is a large freshwater body. The water surface spreads across a broad area surrounded by steep mountains that rise directly from the shores.
The lake has been home to Andean inhabitants for centuries, as shown by old settlements along its shores. These early communities relied on the water and surrounding land for survival in this remote highland region.
Local communities practice traditional fishing methods and have developed ways of life adapted to the high-altitude setting. These practices are deeply rooted in local identity and shape the daily rhythm of people living near the lake.
Visitors can observe water birds at several points around the lake, especially between April and November. Walking paths around the shoreline allow you to explore the landscape and see different bird and plant species.
The lake is home to three bird species found nowhere else in the world: the Junín grebe, the Junín rail, and the white-tufted grebe. These rare species are adapted to the lake's specific ecosystem and can only be encountered in this location.
