Pastaza Province, Province capital in eastern Amazon region, Ecuador
Pastaza Province covers the eastern Amazon region of Ecuador and includes wide rainforest areas and river valleys. Four cantons form the administrative structure of this region, which is characterized by dense vegetation and a network of waterways.
The area was settled in the late nineteenth century by missionaries and indigenous groups who founded settlements along the river courses. The creation of the province followed later and established the administrative unit in Ecuador's Amazon region.
The population combines Mestizo and indigenous communities, maintaining traditional practices while participating in annual events such as the Puyo Carnaval before Lent.
The province can be reached by paved roads from the larger cities in the highlands, with the journey passing through mountain passes. A small airstrip near the capital offers connections for travelers who wish to avoid longer overland journeys.
Annual rainfall reaches exceptionally high levels, making this region one of the wettest areas in the country. This constant humidity enables the cultivation of tropical plants such as cocoa, coffee and tea in plantations along the valleys.
