Coroico, town in Bolivia
Coroico is a small town perched on a mountain in Nor Yungas Province at about 1,782 meters in elevation. It sits on a flat area on the slope of Uchumachi hill, surrounded by rivers and lush forests with citrus and coffee trees.
Coroico began as a village for farmers and traders in the mountains. Nearby communities like Tocaña have roots connected to people from Africa who worked in mining areas in the past, leaving lasting cultural marks.
The communities around Coroico, particularly in Tocaña and nearby villages, keep African traditions alive through dances like Saya and Semba performed at local celebrations. Visitors experience lively music and rhythmic drums that reveal the warm spirit and cultural roots of these places.
Buses and minibuses from La Paz take about two hours to reach the town, departing from the Villa Fátima area. Visitors can hike to Uchumachi hill, explore waterfalls, and swim in natural pools like Pozas del Vagante with local guides who help with trails.
This was Bolivia's first tourism-focused town and still draws visitors with its mix of outdoor experiences and local traditions. The nearby Camino de la Muerte is a notorious mountain road now popular with mountain bikers, offering dramatic views of deep valleys.
