La Senda Verde

La Senda Verde is a wildlife refuge in the Yungas region that provides space for over 1000 animals from many different species. The facility includes specialized areas for different animal groups, featuring both open enclosures and planted spaces that mimic natural habitats.

The refuge was founded in 2003 to counter wildlife trafficking in Bolivia and provide sanctuary for animals in need. In 2010, mining operations altered river flow and caused flooding that forced major reconstruction of the facility.

The refuge is reachable from La Paz using local transportation, with travel through mountainous terrain taking several hours. Wearing sturdy shoes and preparing for weather changes is wise, as the Yungas region has a humid climate.

Many animals here were rescued from illegal wildlife trade and cannot be returned to the wild, so this place becomes their permanent home. Visitors rarely realize how recent the threats to these specific animals were before arrival.
