Sun City, North West, Entertainment resort in North West, South Africa
Sun City is a leisure resort in North West province that spreads across hilly terrain with four main hotels and numerous restaurants. The grounds also include golf courses, water parks, and an amphitheater for live events.
The complex opened in the late 1970s as an entertainment destination in a sparsely populated region near Pilanesberg National Park. In later years, additional hotels and leisure facilities were added.
The resort's architecture draws on motifs and ornaments inspired by historical African kingdoms. This design appears especially in the columns, towers, and wall paintings that guests discover while walking through the main buildings.
Day visitors should book their passes in advance, as entry without a reservation is restricted. Shuttle services from Johannesburg allow arrival without a private vehicle.
The wave pool at Valley of Waves generates regular artificial waves that give surfers and swimmers the feeling of a beach holiday in the middle of the inland. Sandy beaches and palm trees complete the maritime setting.
