Loiyangalani–Suswa High Voltage Power Line, Overhead power transmission line between Loiyangalani and Suswa, Kenya.
The Loiyangalani-Suswa line is a high-voltage transmission line that stretches hundreds of kilometers across Kenya, connecting wind power generation to electrical substations. It carries large quantities of electricity across the landscape to feed the country's power distribution network.
The project started in 2015 under a Spanish contractor but shifted to Chinese companies in 2018 due to financial problems. This transition marked a significant change in how the infrastructure was being built and managed.
The power line development required extensive negotiations with local communities regarding land acquisition and compensation along the transmission corridor.
The line is visible across open terrain and can be seen from roadways when traveling through the region. Travelers can spot the transmission towers from main routes as they cross the landscape.
Significant construction delays meant that electricity costs were being paid even though the line was not yet operational. A compensation agreement resulted from these extended delays between the power company and project developers.
