Embung Nglanggeran, Artificial reservoir in Nglanggeran, Indonesia
Embung Nglanggeran is an artificial water reservoir built on a hillside that collects water from natural springs fed by the ancient Nglanggeran volcano. The structure sits amid fruit orchards and is designed with viewing areas and facilities to accommodate visitors.
The water basin was constructed by the Indonesian government to support agricultural irrigation across the region. The Sultan Hamengku Buwono X officially opened the facility in 2013.
Local farmers manage fruit orchards around the water body, growing durian, longan, rambutan, avocado, and cocoa across the surrounding slopes. This farming tradition shapes how people in the area live and use the land around the reservoir.
Parking areas, restrooms, prayer facilities, and food stalls are available on the grounds, along with several viewing towers for exploring the site. Visitors should expect some walking on inclines and should arrive early to enjoy clear views.
The water displays a natural turquoise-green color in daylight due to algae growth at the bottom of the basin. This color shift changes throughout the day depending on the sun angle and weather conditions.
