Queensland Independent College, Private primary school in Merrimac, Gold Coast, Australia
Queensland Independent College was a primary school in Merrimac on the Gold Coast that taught students from Prep through Year 7. The school used multiple teaching methods at the same time to encourage each child to think critically and work independently.
The institution opened in 2009 as Queensland Montessori College and was meant to replace an earlier Montessori school. It closed in 2017, ending its operations at that location.
The school brought together different teaching approaches to create an environment where students could discover their own way of learning. Visitors could see how this variety was reflected in the classroom design and in how teachers worked with children.
The school operated with smaller classes to respond to how each student learned best. These smaller class sizes helped staff support each student at their own pace and with their particular needs.
Although the school started as a Montessori facility, it gradually moved away from that tradition and instead added ideas from other educators like John Dewey. This shift showed how schools can adapt their methods to do what they believe is right for their students.
