Buranda State School, Heritage-listed state school in Woolloongabba, Queensland, Australia.
Buranda State School is a spacious education facility in Woolloongabba with symmetrical timber buildings, sporting facilities, and mature trees supporting outdoor learning. The architecture features large south-facing windows and extensive verandahs designed to bring natural light and fresh air into the classrooms.
The school began in 1918 with separate facilities for boys and girls operating on the same grounds. In 1967, these two parts merged into a single school serving all students together.
The school sits on traditional Turrbal and Jagera land, with the community keeping memories of former students who took part in major historical events. You can feel how the place honors those connections through the spaces and materials left behind.
The site is easy to explore as buildings are laid out clearly with open spaces between them and wide pathways throughout. The flat terrain and abundant shade from mature trees make walking comfortable, especially during warmer weather.
A swimming pool built in 1926 with its dressing shed survives on the grounds, making it one of the rare school pools from that decade still standing in the state. Most other school facilities from that era were later torn down or rebuilt, which makes this one stand out.
