Mappi Regency

Mappi Regency is an administrative division in South Papua characterized by wetlands, rivers, and lowland terrain. The landscape is shaped by waterways that influence how people move through and settle in this region.

This regency was established in 2002 as a separate administrative territory when it was split from Merauke. The creation marked an important administrative reorganization in the southern province.

The Awyu and Wiyagar communities speak their own languages and follow customs passed down through generations. These traditions shape daily life across the districts and remain central to local identity.

Getting around relies on water transport and air services, with few roads connecting different areas. Plan travel accordingly and allow flexible timing since water and air routes can be affected by weather.

The Korowai people build their homes on tall wooden poles high above the ground. This construction style emerged as a practical response to life in a flooded landscape surrounded by wildlife.
