Mappi Regency

Mappi Regency spans across 25,609 square kilometers of land characterized by wetlands, rivers, and lowland areas at approximately 5 meters above sea level.

The administrative division emerged on December 11, 2002, when authorities separated it from Merauke Regency to create four independent administrative territories.

The indigenous Awyu and Wiyagar communities maintain their traditional languages and customs throughout the fifteen districts of the regency.

Transportation within the regency relies primarily on water routes and air services through Kepi Airport due to limited road infrastructure.

The local Korowai people construct elevated houses, known as Rumah Tinggi, positioned high above ground level for protection from wildlife.
