Bogoslof Wilderness

Bogoslof consists of a rugged spire called Castle Rock rising above rocky beaches and black lava, surrounded by the cold waters of Bering Sea.

The island emerged from an underwater volcanic eruption in 1796, leading to multiple periods of volcanic activity throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt established the area as a sanctuary for marine wildlife, recognizing its importance for seabird and marine mammal populations.

Access requires special permits from refuge managers, with no anchorage points available and constant exposure to strong winds and severe ocean storms.

The island hosts 90,000 seabirds including tufted puffins, while supporting growing fur seal populations and diminishing sea lion colonies on its volcanic shores.
