Sonora River, River system in Sonora, Mexico

The Sonora River is a river in the state of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico, flowing from the mountains in the east down through valleys and lowlands toward the west. Several dams along its course regulate the flow of water before it reaches the drier coastal areas.

The river played a key role in the founding of colonial towns during the 16th and 17th centuries, including Arizpe, which once served as the administrative capital of a vast northern territory. Over time, dams were built along the river to manage water in one of Mexico's driest states.

Towns along the river have colonial churches and plazas that still serve as gathering places for daily life. In smaller towns like Arizpe, visitors can see how community life continues to revolve around these open spaces.

The river is easiest to reach in its lower sections, near towns and villages where the banks are open and accessible on foot. Visiting during the dry season or just after winter gives the most stable conditions for walking along the valley.

In the early 1900s, beavers were recorded along the river, which was then the southernmost point of their natural range in North America. This suggests that the river once had much more water and denser vegetation than what visitors see today.
