Desert Sunlight Solar Farm, photovoltaic power station in California
Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is a large photovoltaic power station in California's Mojave Desert consisting of approximately eight million thin-film panels spread across thousands of acres. The panels are mounted on steel supports and positioned flat to capture sunlight efficiently throughout the day.
The project was conceived in 2008 by FirstSolar and received government approval in 2011 before beginning power generation in early 2015. Construction spanned several years and required thousands of workers to complete the installation.
The name reflects the power of desert sunlight to generate energy at scale. The installation represents a modern addition to the Mojave landscape and demonstrates how technology operates within arid environments.
The site is located near Desert Center in the flat, open terrain of the Mojave Desert where rows of panels are easily visible. The grounds are large and well-organized with wide paths between panels and buildings for convenient access.
The facility includes a battery storage system completed in 2022 with capacity to store a total of 530 megawatt-hours of energy. This allows the farm to continue supplying power even when sunlight is not available.
