Zacpeten

Zacpeten is an archaeological site near Flores with multiple groups of structures arranged on a central hill and in surrounding areas. The layout includes ceremonial complexes, residential zones, and other structural units that formed an active community center.

The Kowoj Maya settled here in the 15th century after migrating from Mayapan and established an independent community. The site maintained its importance and autonomy during the early period of Spanish control in the region.

The building groups A, B, and C display architectural patterns that differ from other sites in Petén and reflect regional construction variations. These differences suggest how different Maya communities designed their structures.
