Ixlu

Ixlu is an archaeological site near Lake Petén Itzá containing more than 150 structures in its core area. The site features temples, plazas, and residential buildings that were constructed over many centuries.

The site was occupied for over a thousand years, beginning in the early period and continuing through to Spanish colonial times. Habitation patterns changed significantly as power shifted in the region.

The Temple of Hidden Jars contains niches with ceramic vessels that reveal how people performed religious rituals at this location. These objects show ceremonial practices that were important to the community.

The site is located east of Flores and is best explored with a knowledgeable guide. Visitors should wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, as the terrain is uneven and heat can be intense.

The grounds contain two ballcourts and a twin pyramid complex, features that set it apart from most other settlements from this period in the region. These structures are rare to find together.
