During the colonial period, the Jesuit order managed sugar estates in the Chota Valley and brought enslaved workers whose descendants form the current population. This heritage shaped the community's composition and continues to define its history today.
The settlement is part of a group of eleven Afro-Ecuadorian communities in the upper Chota region, maintaining cultural traditions distinct from coastal areas. Daily life here reflects practices and ways of living that have taken root over generations and remain visible today.
