Ermita de Jesús Nazareno, National monument hermitage in Popayán, Colombia
The Ermita de Jesús Nazareno stands on an elevated position in the historic center of Popayán, featuring traditional ecclesiastical architecture and colonial design elements.
Built in 1617 by Lorenzo de Mendoza and María de León, the hermitage received authorization from Bishop Vasco Jacinto de Contreras for reconstruction in 1660.
The hermitage houses numerous art pieces, including the image of Jesus of Nazareth from Italy and sculptures representing 18th-century Ecuadorian baroque style.
Located at Calle 5 and Carrera 1 intersection, the hermitage maintains regular opening hours and requires visitors to follow specific guidelines regarding photography and conduct.
The structure served as the first cemetery of Popayán from 1786 to 1845, primarily used for indigenous people and those without financial means.
