Amo Jesús de Puelenje, Religious wooden sculpture in Puelenje, Popayán, Colombia
The wooden sculpture depicts Jesus Christ with symbols of his passion, following the baroque style from the Quito school of art.
Missionaries of the Order of Preachers arrived in Popayán and managed social processes, particularly religious ones, establishing the first chapel in Puelenje during the 16th century.
The sculpture participates in the procession of La Negación during Holy Week in Popayán, representing a biblical passage from the Gospel of John.
The Fundación Junta Amo Jesús de Puelenje, established in 1998, maintains the sculpture and organizes religious celebrations throughout the year.
After the 1983 Popayán earthquake damaged the previous church, the community gathered resources to construct a new temple to house the sculpture.
