Puelenje, Rural settlement in Popayán, Colombia.
Puelenje is a rural settlement in the Popayán district of Colombia, situated at 1,770 meters (5,800 feet) in the Pubenza valley. The area lies between the Cauca River to the north and the municipalities of El Tambo and Timbío, featuring agricultural landscapes and traditional residential structures.
The settlement originated after Sebastián de Belalcázar conquered the Pubenense indigenous people in 1535, leading to Pedro de Velasco receiving the land in 1537. Dominican missionaries later established the parish church in the 16th century, which became the religious and social center of the community.
The Amo Jesus de Puelenje parish church serves as the spiritual heart of the community where locals gather for religious celebrations and community events. The building reflects the deep-rooted Christian traditions that have shaped daily life in this rural area.
The settlement is accessible via regular bus connections to Popayán that run throughout the day, making it easy to reach from the city. Basic services are available locally, including a water system from the Rio Negro Rural Aqueduct and small shops for everyday supplies.
In December 2021, the settlement became the first designated Orange Economy Development Area in the Cauca region, supporting creative and cultural businesses. This designation makes it a test ground for new cultural business models and demonstrates confidence in local creative potential.
