Munchique National Natural Park, Protected area in Cauca Department, Colombia
Munchique is a protected mountain park in the western Andes where numerous waterfalls and streams flow through dense vegetation across steep terrain. The landscape rises through different elevation zones, each supporting distinct plant and animal communities from tropical to cloud forest environments.
The park was established in 1977 as a protected area to preserve the ecosystems of the western Andean range for future generations. This designation reflected growing recognition of the need to safeguard fragile mountain environments across Colombia.
Local communities have maintained deep connections to these lands and continue to use them in ways that reflect their traditions. These living practices shape how people today approach caring for and living with this landscape.
Visitors reach the park through El Tambo, a town located south of Popayán. Hiking requires moderate mountain skills and proper gear because of wet conditions and uneven trails throughout the region.
Ornithologists discovered a previously unknown bird species here in 2003 and named it after the location. This finding demonstrated that the region still holds undiscovered secrets in its natural world.
