Lake Otún, High-altitude lake in Los Nevados National Park, Colombia.

Lake Otún is a high-altitude lake inside Los Nevados National Natural Park in the Colombian Andes, sitting at around 3,900 feet (1,200 m) above most surrounding valleys. It occupies a wide glacial hollow, bordered by rocky ridges, low-growing mountain plants, and the headwaters of the Otún River.

The lake and its surroundings were known to indigenous peoples long before Spanish colonization and held a place in their relationship with the mountain. In the 20th century, the area was protected as a national park, and later recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance.

The lake gives its name to the Otún River, which flows out of it and supplies drinking water to the city of Pereira far below. Visitors standing at the shore can see the exact point where the lake becomes a river, making the connection between the high mountain and the lowland city very concrete.

Reaching the lake on foot takes several hours from the nearest access point, and the high altitude means the body needs time to adjust before and during the hike. Warm, waterproof layers are a must, as cold wind and rain can arrive without warning at any point in the day.

Although it looks like a simple mountain lake, it was officially listed as a Ramsar wetland in 2018, a category usually associated with lowland marshes and coastal lagoons. This means the protection extends not just to the water, but to the surrounding páramo grassland and bog that feed it.
