Sutamarchán sits on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense plateau, 44 kilometers from Tunja, bordered by Santa Sofía, Sáchica, Villa de Leyva, Saboyá, Ráquira, and Tinjacá.
The Spanish conquistador Antonio de Santana established Sutamarchán on December 14, 1556, in a territory previously inhabited by the Muisca people under zaque rule.
The municipality celebrates its agricultural heritage with an annual Tomatina festival, which began in 2004, mirroring the Spanish tradition from Buñol.
