Xieti Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Tota, Colombia
Xieti Nature Reserve is a protected forest area in the mountains near Tota situated at about 3000 meters elevation. It consists of dense highland forest and open moorland vegetation with views overlooking the lower lake and surrounding valleys.
The area received official protection status in 2022 under a designation for private conservation areas. This recognition made it the first officially designated private protected space in the Lake Tota basin.
The site hosts environmental education programs where local groups actively participate in conservation efforts and forest restoration work. Visitors encounter people engaged in hands-on protection of the high-altitude wetlands and can witness how communities connect with this landscape.
The site sits in the mountains with access via hiking trails that remain walkable throughout the day. The elevation can feel challenging for inexperienced hikers, so plan for a gradual pace and bring plenty of water.
The area serves as a refuge for a critically rare bird species found in only a few locations worldwide. Birdwatchers visit specifically to spot this species and observe dozens of other highland birds in their natural setting.
