La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a district in San Carlos Canton at the base of Arenal Volcano, spreading across the surrounding landscape with diverse natural features. The area contains natural hot springs, rainforest, and walking trails that lead through different types of vegetation and terrain.

The district changed dramatically after the 1968 eruption of Arenal Volcano, which shaped the landscape and influenced local development. This volcanic event marked a turning point that redirected the region from agriculture toward international tourism.

Local farmers work the fertile volcanic soil to grow coffee, cocoa, and tropical fruits, shaping the region's identity and daily rhythms. These agricultural practices remain visible throughout the district as you travel through the countryside.

The district is accessible via National Routes 4 and 702, with regular bus services offering multiple daily connections. Bringing comfortable walking shoes and a change of clothes is useful for exploring the trails and hot springs.

The district contains Cerro Chato, an extinct volcano with a crater lake reachable through forest paths. Climbing to this lake gives visitors a view into the interior of an old volcano and the surrounding woodland.
