Papaloapan River, Major river system in Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico

The Papaloapan is a river system in southeastern Mexico that flows through Veracruz and Oaxaca before emptying into Alvarado Lagoon near the Gulf Coast. It receives water from numerous tributaries and forms a network that shapes the region's landscape.

The river was an important center for the Olmec civilization during pre-Columbian times, with early settlements established along its fertile banks. These early communities later influenced the development of complex societies across Mesoamerica.

The name comes from Nahuatl and means river of butterflies, which reflects the indigenous heritage of Mexico's Gulf Coast region.

The river allows boat travel for several hundred kilometers upstream from Alvarado Lagoon and offers various ways to explore it by water. The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels are more stable and easier to navigate.

Two large dams regulate the water system and control the river flow for the entire region. This infrastructure enables irrigation of farmland while creating artificial lakes that have become part of the local landscape.
