Las Choapas, human settlement in Mexico
Las Choapas is a human settlement in Veracruz, Mexico, surrounded by dense forest and slow-moving rivers. The place consists of simple houses and small shops in the center where daily life unfolds and residents move about.
Las Choapas grew from a small rural settlement into a larger community when oil companies arrived in the region. The town became an official municipality in 1967 after residents requested formal recognition, marking its development as a permanent settlement.
The name Las Choapas comes from Achoapan, reflecting the water and natural resources that were central to early life here. Today, cultural expression appears in the danzón music that accompanies local festivities and in handicrafts made from woven vine materials that visitors can see throughout the town.
The town center is easily walkable with markets and restaurants that open early and close in the afternoon. Visitors should expect hot, humid weather and bring light clothing and sun protection, especially during the rainy season from May through October.
The original name Achoapan meant river of the achiote plant, a hint at natural resources that once shaped the local economy. Today traditional foods like armadillo and tepezcuintle still appear in local kitchens, showing the deep roots of the place's eating practices.
