Knowledge Is Power Program, network of college-preparatory charter schools in the United States
The Knowledge Is Power Program is a network of free public charter schools across the United States that welcome all students regardless of background. The schools operate with extended school days and additional learning time to prepare students for college and beyond.
The program was founded in 1994 by two teachers who wanted to create a new kind of school after their work with Teach For America. Since the first schools opened in Houston and New York City, the network has grown to hundreds of schools across the country.
The Knowledge Is Power Program schools are described as places where teamwork and mutual support are central values. The community emphasizes that students and staff care for one another and work together toward shared goals.
Entry to one of these schools works through a lottery system when more students are interested than spaces are available. Before enrolling, families are invited for conversations to discuss expectations and the commitment of everyone involved.
The program places special focus on extended school days and summer programs to give students access to activities like sports, music, and theater that families would normally have to pay for. This additional time and opportunity helps students develop skills and demonstrate their talents in varied ways.
