Mud Creek Glacier, Glacier in Mount Shasta, California, United States
Mud Creek Glacier is a glacier on Mount Shasta's eastern side at approximately 10,900 feet elevation. Its surface displays distinct lateral moraines and crevasses that reflect its age and the ongoing movement of the ice.
The glacier was recorded on topographic maps by the United States Geological Survey in 1987 and recognized as one of Mount Shasta's seven major glaciers. This official documentation marked an important milestone in tracking the mountain's ice features.
Scientists and researchers regularly monitor Mud Creek Glacier to study climate patterns and geological changes in California's mountain environments.
The glacier is best accessed from the Crystal Creek trailhead, where you can follow Sargents Ridge to reach observation points above Mud Creek Canyon. The hike provides good views of the ice and the surrounding mountain landscape.
The glacier's meltwater creates a waterfall at Mud Creek Falls that drops about 150 feet (45 meters) in a cascading series. This dramatic feature flows through the deep canyon system directly below the ice field.
