Wintun Glacier, Glacier on Mount Shasta, California, United States
Wintun Glacier is an ice field on the eastern side of Mount Shasta that stretches for several kilometers along the mountain. The ice lies at high elevation and contains multiple zones with steep slopes and deep crevasses throughout its expanse.
The ice mass experienced significant changes over the 20th century, especially between the middle of that century and the early 2000s. During this period the glacial area grew considerably and shifted in its spatial extent.
The name comes from the Wintun people who lived in this region, adopted by explorers who documented the area in the 1800s. Today the name honors the indigenous inhabitants of this California mountain landscape.
Access requires alpine equipment and climbing skills since conditions at this elevation are demanding. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather, slippery ice, and the risk of falling into crevasses.
The glacial area contains a significant waterfall formed from melting ice, one of the highest on the mountain. Few visitors make the effort to explore this remote part of the landscape.
