Mountain Lakes Wilderness spans 23,071 acres of protected land featuring numerous alpine lakes, dense forests, and diverse wildlife within its perfectly square boundaries.
The area transformed from a 12,000-foot mountain in the southern Cascades into a caldera through volcanic activity and subsequent glacial formations.
Indigenous tribes established their presence in the region by utilizing natural resources, leaving behind artifacts that document their connection to the land.
The wilderness contains an 8.2-mile Mountain Lakes Loop Trail system connecting Clover Creek, Mountain Lakes, and Varney Creek trails for outdoor activities.
The area supports populations of rainbow and brook trout in its lakes, while seasonal mosquitos from snowmelt through mid-August provide sustenance for fish.
