Central Oregon, Geographic region in Oregon, United States
Central Oregon is a region between the Cascade Range and the Ochoco Mountains, centered around Bend and spanning three counties. The landscape combines high desert plateaus, flowing rivers, and forested areas that support outdoor recreation throughout the seasons.
Explorer Peter Skene Ogden arrived in 1826, followed by Captain John C. Fremont who mapped the territory in 1843, marking the beginning of European interest. These expeditions opened the way for later settlement and the growth of communities like Bend.
Native American communities shaped this landscape for centuries before European contact, leaving traces in place names and sacred sites throughout the region. Visitors can encounter these connections when traveling through smaller towns and natural areas that remain important to local tribes today.
The region enjoys about 300 sunny days per year, with summers bringing warm weather and spring and fall offering comfortable conditions for exploring. Bring layers for temperature changes, as the elevation means cool nights, especially outside the warmest months.
The Deschutes River flows through the entire region from mountain sources, creating both rapids and calm sections that support different water sports. The river has become so renowned for fly fishing that it regularly hosts national championship competitions.
