Lemei Rock is a volcanic summit in the Indian Heaven Wilderness area, standing at approximately 5,900 feet. A crater lake called Lake Wapiki sits at the peak, surrounded by volcanic rock formations.
The volcano formed during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs with volcanic activity occurring approximately 8,200 years ago. This distant past shaped the distinctive rock layers and crater structure visible today.
The mountain's name derives from Chinook language meaning 'old woman' and serves as a central landmark in the Indian Heaven volcanic field region.
Access to the summit is available via Trail 33 or Trail 34, both requiring a parking permit. These routes remain accessible year-round but become more difficult in winter due to snow conditions.
The summit hosts solid volcanic rock formations and is home to ground squirrel colonies. These small rodents have adapted to life at this exposed elevation.
