Ape Canyon

Ape Canyon is a narrow gorge located on the southeast side of Mount St. Helens in Washington. The canyon cuts through forested terrain with steep rock walls that create a distinctive passage through the landscape.

In 1924, gold miners reported an encounter with large creatures in this area, which drew the attention of Forest Service officials. The incident became a defining moment in the local lore surrounding the canyon.

The trail through the canyon is demanding and best suited for experienced hikers with good fitness levels. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain, steep sections, and the variable weather typical of higher elevations.

The 1980 volcanic eruption reshaped the canyon dramatically, yet sections of older forest survived the event and remain visible today. This mix of recovered and surviving woodlands tells the story of the mountain's recent geologic past.
