Wind River Arboretum, Research arboretum in Skamania County, United States.
Wind River Arboretum is a forest research site in Skamania County containing more than 250 tree species from around the world. A 2-mile trail guides visitors through the different sections, allowing them to see how these various trees are arranged and cultivated.
The research station was established in 1912 following a major fire in 1902 that destroyed forests across the area. Scientists began experimenting with different tree species to understand which ones could best recover the damaged landscape.
The arboretum emerged as a response to local forest damage and has shaped how people in the region understand forest recovery and management. Visitors walking the grounds today witness the results of that long-standing scientific mission.
The site is open to visitors without any fees and can be reached by taking SR 14 toward Carson. From there, head north on Wind River Highway and turn onto Hemlock Road to reach the entrance.
Decades of research here revealed that native tree species thrive far better than imported varieties from other regions. Many of the transplanted trees failed to survive over the years, while local species continued to flourish.
