South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park
South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park, Provincial park in Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, Canada
South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park is a large protected area in British Columbia featuring mountains, alpine meadows, grasslands, and glacial lakes. The park contains more than 170 kilometers of hiking trails that wind through different elevations and habitats.
The park was established in 2010, growing out of the former Spruce Lake Protected Area to safeguard the region's natural resources and recreation. This designation marked an important step in protecting the landscape from future development.
Three Indigenous Nations - the Tsilhqot'in, St'at'imc, and Secwepemc - have long gathered plants and resources from these lands for food and medicine. This deep connection to the region remains part of how people understand and value the place today.
Access to the park is through logging roads that require high-clearance vehicles to reach the starting points for hikes. It helps to check road conditions ahead of time and prepare for more remote and rugged terrain.
The park contains seven distinct biogeoclimatic zones that support around 125 plant species found nowhere else. This variety of ecosystems packed into one place makes it special for exploring different landscape types.
