The Solar Project, Power plant projects in the US and Spain
The Solar Project is a thermal power station where mirrors concentrate sunlight onto three tall towers to generate steam and produce electricity. The facility spans roughly 3500 acres in the Mojave Desert with more than 170000 mirrors distributed across three separate generating units.
Construction began in 2010 and operations started in 2014, making it one of the world's largest solar thermal plants at the time. The project was developed by BrightSource Energy and Bechtel, backed by investments from Google, NRG Energy, and a US government loan guarantee.
The facility demonstrates how modern technology harnesses sunlight to produce energy for everyday use. The rotating mirrors and tall towers have become landmarks in the desert landscape, reflecting both human ambition and the effort to transform natural resources into practical power.
The facility sits on federal land in the desert and is visible from distant roads, especially when the sun shines and mirrors reflect light. Visitors should expect intense heat and a dry climate, requiring protective clothing and plenty of water.
The mirrors create such intense reflected light on sunny days that it is visible from great distances and sometimes causes glare for drivers and pilots. This phenomenon demonstrates the immense power the facility uses to concentrate sunlight but has also led to safety measures and ongoing research.
